Poetry At Greenville
Laurence J. Sasso, Jr.
Why Love Is Like The Snow
It is white and it goes on for acres and acres
covering everything it touches.
It softens briars and thickens rope.
When it sticks to itself it grows.
In the right air you never see it coming
until it swarms all over your face,
gathering like white petals on sculpture.
When it hardens enough to bear their weight
boys will cut from it the shape of a heart
and carry it to the window where you can look
and tell them why love is like the snow
as they struggle to keep it from breaking
